Lower value of non-residential building consents in January 2010

The total unadjusted value of non-residential building work put in place for the December 2009 year was $4.948 billion; a 5.2 percent decrease from the previous December year. When adjusted for inflation, the trend value declined consecutively since the March 2009 quarter.

The issuing of non-residential building consents provides an indication of future levels of non-residential building work. As shown in Figure 9, the unadjusted value of non-residential building consents issued decreased by 0.6 percent in December 2009 quarter compared with December 2008 quarter.  The latest January 2010 consent data shows a total of $4.387 billion worth of non-residential building consents were issued in the year ended January 2010 and this is 3.9 percent lower than the same time last year.

Note: The monthly trendseries which is estimated after the removal of consents valued at $25,000 or more is currently being reviewed by Statistics New Zealand and this information will not be available for now.
