Is licensing for me? Bricklaying and blocklaying
If you lay or erect bricks or blocks for any category of building, then this is the class you should apply to be licensed in.
The skills and knowledge required to be licensed in this class include but are not limited to the following:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the regulatory environment of the building construction industry. This includes understanding of the purposes of the Building Act, the Building Code, the Licensed Building Practitioner Scheme, the building consent process, key roles in the design and building process and the importance of operating within your own competence.
- Demonstrate knowledge of current building and trade practice. This includes explaining current building construction methods and trade practice, explaining specific veneer and/or structural masonry construction methods and trade practice, demonstrating knowledge of the needs of other trades and the process of integration, describing safe working practices and management of environmental issues on site, and describing site set-up and management requirements.
- Carry out planning and coordination for masonry work. This includes reading and interpreting working drawings, specifications, and schedules of quantities, and carrying out building calculations, and ordering and coordinating material supply.
- Carry out masonry work. For veneer this includes preparing to lay brick veneer and related masonry units, laying a limited foundation wall to a maximum height of 1.2 metres, laying brick veneer and related masonry units, and completing and finishing the laying of brick veneer and related masonry units
For structural masonry this includes completing preparations to lay structural masonry units, laying masonry units, completing and finishing the laying of masonry units.
Area(s) of practice
You can elect to be assessed in more than one area of practice (i.e., veneer and structural masonry). Whether or not you elect to be assessed in more than one area of practice does not affect your licensing ID Card - it will show that you are licensed in 'Bricklaying and Blocklaying'.
Once licensed you have a professional responsibility to work within your area(s) of competence.
